ARGENTINA AS CANDIDATE
SEAT ON SECURITY COUNCIL
“SUPPORT TO BE GIVEN BY U.S. AND BRITAIN” (Rec. 7 p.m.) NEW YORK, Sept. 28. “The United States aid Britain have decided to support Argentina’s candidacy for a place on the Security Council,” says the “New York Times” correspondent at the United Nations. “Originally, the United States’ support was to have gone to Cuba or Uruguay for one of the three seats —Australia. Poland, and Brazil—which will become vacant on January 1. “The switch was made, however, in accordance with Washington’s policy of accepting the Latin-American choice for United Nations posts tacitly allotted to that bloc.
“The British support for Argentina was influenced by the same reasoning, and was strengthened by the United Kingdom’s reliance on beef shipments from Argentina. “Latin-American support for Argentina became definite on Thursday, and surprised many delegations from outside the Western Hemisphere.
“Reliable sources say that the LatinAmerican group was at first split on the issue, but the deciding factor was Brazil’s support for Argentina.”
