SIR THOMAS HUNTER

VICTORIA* COLLEGE PRINCIPAL (P.A.) WELLINGTON. September 29. Sir Thomas Hunter was appointed full-time principal of Victoria University College at a meeting of the college council to-day. For nearly 10 years he had been professor of philosophy as well as part-time principal.

Sir Thomas Hunter, who was born in London in 1876. came to New Zealand at an early age and was educated at the Port Chalmers High School and the University of Otago. In 1898 he was awarded the New Zealand senior scholarship in medical science. He was appointed senior housemaster at Waitaki Boys’ High School in 1899. In 1904 he became lecturer in mental science and economics at Victoria University College, and in 1907 professor of philosophy and economics at the college. In 1909 a separate department of economics was established. He has had long service on the Victoria University College Council, the Massey Agricultural College Council, and the Senate of the University of New Zealand. He was Vice-Chancellor of the‘University from 1929 until recently.
