PROFESSOR F. SINCLAIRE

RETIREMENT IN 1949

Professor F. Sinclaire will resign from the chair of English at Canterbury University College as from May 31, 1949. The college council received this notice with regret yesterday afternoon. The chairman (Mr W. C. Colee) said an opportunity would be made -later to pay tribute to Professor Sinclaire’s long service. Born near Auckland, Professor Sinclaire was educated at the Auckland Grammar School and Auckland Uni-

versify College, being senior scholar in Latin and taking the Master of Arts degree with first-class honours. He later studied at Manchester College. Oxford, and became Prizeman in Hebrew and won the Williamson scholarship in open competition with graduates of all British universities. From Oxford he went to Australia and was at first lecturer in English at the University of Melbourne, and later at the University of Western Australia, where he was also director of adult education. In 1932. Professor Sinclaire took up his appointment as Professor of English at Canterbury University College. He will conclude actual service at the college at the end of next year.
