WINTER SPORTS CLUB’S CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Canterbury Winter Sports Club’s annual championships were held at Mount Cheeseman over the week-end In the men’s downhill event, in which 14 started off the top of Mount Cockayne, the course ran down through the basins past the club’s top hut. a vertical descent of some 1200 ft. J. Maher led at the hut, but E. H. Perry, last year’s winner, finished strongly to win by 20sec from Maher.

In the women’s event, which was held over part of the men’s course. Mrs A. G. Flower, last year’s winner, again ran confidently to win comfortably. The wet spring snow was on the heavy side. The maiden slalom was won easily by J. Maher, with two very steady runs.

For the men’s and women’s slalom events on Sunday a hard north-west wind was blowing and the course was lower down the mountain, where there was good spring snow, ideal for slalom events. The course was a vertical descent of about 400 ft through a steep corridor, that led into a flush and then down through two lower, basins. E. Perry again raced steadily to win by 6sec from W Platts, last year’s winer. Mrs Flower won the women’s event by more than 30sec Results:—
