SOUTH ISLAND ROAD CHAMPIONSHIP
The South Island road cycling championship conducted by the Southbridge Athletic and Cycle Club on Saturday resulted as follows:—B. A. Froggatt, 1; R. Taylor, 2; J. Burgess, 3. Fastest time: A J. Tomson, Ihr 38min 28sec. Hubbard returned fastest time in the junior section, Ihr 43min. There were 33 starters. With half the distance covered Froggatt led several riders past the starting post for the fourth lap at a fast pace and a number of the front markers had been dropped.. The scratch team, led by M. Drake, came through at ’.O miles an hour, and were only holding time by a narrow margin. Froggatt again led the bunch of riders on the last lap, and although the scratch riders had made up time they had no chance of catching the leaders with six miles to go
Excitement was high when several of the riders approached the finishing line in a bunch. In a good sprint Froggatt stalled off a strong challenge and won by half a length from Taylor and Burgess. The six scratch riders were together 100 yards from the line, and in the sprint A. J. Tomson flashed over the line inches ahead of his co-markers.
