CARDIFF BEATS AUSTRALIANS
HARD-FOUGHT MATCH (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 11 p.m.) LONDON, Sept. 27. In a Rugby Union match, Cardiff beat the touring Australian team by 11 points to 3 after leading by 3 points to 0 at halftime. Forty thousand people crowded into the Cardiff Arms Park to watch the home team give the Australian fifteen the hardest match of its tour. Cardiff kept up heavy pressure on the Australian defence, with the Welsh backs always combining dangerously in movements which penetrated deeply. Dawson (Australia) retired injured. He later returned to the field, but had to retire again. After Cardiff had secured a penalty goal as a result of a scrum infringement, Shehadie missed equalising by inches. Shortly afterwards, Shehadie left the field, leaving the Australians with 13 men. Shehadie returned and played in the second half with an injured arm. He could not join in the scrums' but pushed with his right hand. Cardiff had nearly all the best of the tight play, but Australia was unlucky not to score when Howell, Allan, and Eastes handled before Buchan went over the line. Buchan was recalled for putting his foot into touch. McMaster soon after‘missed a penalty kick. Cardiff led by 6 points to 0 when Allan scored for Australia with a penalty goal After 20 minutes’ play in the second half, Tweedale injured his left shoulder, but was able to continue. Cardiff, near the end of the game, set up a tremendous attack which opened the way for a try by Davies. Tamplin converted. Scorers for Cardiff were D. H. Jones and Cliff Davies. Tamplin converted one try and kicked a penalty goal. Allan kicked a penalty goal for the Australians.
