MANAWATU BEATS SOUTHLAND
LOSING TEAM FINISHES STRONGLY
(P.A.) PALMERSTON NORTH. Sept. 28. Manawatu, which up to last week had lost seven of its nine senior representative Rugby engagements this season, caused a surprise on Saturday by beating the touring Southland team by 17 points, to 13 in a most convincing manner. Up to 25 minutes before the finish, Manawatu was leading by 17 points to 0. In the closing stages. Southland showed greater stamina, scored 13 points, and came close to scoring more. Forsaking loose, open, forward play, Manawatu concentrated on keeping the ball in the tight, and the forwards hunted as a pack. Southland, employing the same tactics, was completely outplayed. Had the visitors opened up the play the result might have been different.
