ENTRANTS FOR MISS NEW ZEALAND CONTEST
The entry of a Maori girl. Miss Hira Tauwhare. of Masterton. into the Miss New Zealand quest had raised the question of the birth requirements of the quest, said the executive director, Mr K. W. Kilpatrick.
“The position was clearly laid down by the honorary board of directors at one of its early meetings,” he said. “It was decided that the competition .should be open to any girl born in New Zealand, of British nationality. “This obviously includes Maori girls, but it has excluded from the quest would-be competitors born in Britain, Australia, and Jugoslavia, though they have*lived in New Zealand practically all their lives.
“Perhaps the most interesting case.” Mr Kilpatrick said, “is that of one of the Auckland entrants. Miss Matte Morris. She was born in Niue Island while her father was acting as Resident Commissioner there, and he sent to the quest headquarters official references and extracts from statutes and regulations which proved conclusively that Niue is legally part of the Dominion of New Zealand. So Miss Morris is able to enter.”
