U.N. ASSEMBLY ON PALESTINE
DR. EVATT CHAIRMAN OF COMMITTEE
(Rec. 7 p.m.) NEW YORK. Sept. 25. Dr. H. V. Evatt (Australia) was today unanimously elected chairman of the Palestine committee of the United Nations Assembly. He was nominated by Cuba and Belgium. The only objection came from Jugoslavia, whose delegate said he did not think the chairmanship should be held by the representative of any British nation. However, he suggested no alternative candidate.
Dr. Evatt, after thanking the committee, said he thought that both the Arab Higher Committee and the Jewish Agency for Palestine should be represented at the committee’s deliberations. The committee’s first duty, however, was to hear a statement by the United Kingdom as the mandatory Power.
