MINE DEPUTIES’ DISPUTE
OFFER OF INCREASED PAY ACCEPTED <Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, Sept. 25. The conference of the National Association of Colliery Overmen, Deputies and Shotfirers, which on September 12 gave the National Coal Board notice of the termination of its contract, but later agreed to negotiate, has decided to accept a provisional offer from the board of wage increases for deputies and overmen.
An official said the increases represented an annual cost to the board of £2,500,000. Notice was originally given because the overmen claimed that they were excluded from the benefits of the five-day week, although the deputies and shotfirers were not. The conference decided to accept the board’s offer in spite of fears which the executive expressed that the Shotfirers would not like it.
