DUNEDIN SPRING MEETING

RACING

PROSPECTS FOR TO DAY

LORD DUNDONALD LIKELY TO BE FAVOURITE

Frorh Our Own Reporter DUNEDIN, Sept. 26. The w-eather at W r ingatui was threatening at times to-day,- but no rain fell, and the going should be good for the opening day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s spring meeting to-morrow. The fields in the majority of the races are well filled, and the Trial Handicap may have to be run in divisions, the field being three more than the safety number. No scratchings were posted to-day.

Lord Dundonald is likely to be a strong favourite for the Ranfurly Handicap, but with most of the others the issue looks to be open. Signal Officer and Salmon Spear are making thier first appearance for several months, but may be more forward than is usual for horses trained at Invercargill, as conditions there have been more favourable than usual during the winter. Joygiver has usually found distances beyond a mile troublesome, but with a drop in the weights he should see the journey out. Boolamskee and Hansel make more appeal than Hakim and Brockie, although the last two named horses run good races on occasions.

In McLean Stakes the Riccarton youngsters, Card Money (20), Finnigan (18), Musselman (21), Robin Redbreast (16), and Balkis (19) have been unlucky in the draw with barrier positions counting so much in this race. With nothing in the way of form as a guide, favouritism is likely to be decided by the barrier position drawn. The favoured Riccarton candidates, Magical (14) and Trident (11), may now find the locally-trained St.; Bruno (2) a tough proposition. Additional riding engagements include— L. W. Hare: Great Chum, Sir Abbot, Pestee. J. W. Dooley: Duncraigan, Royal Anne, All Hurry. Village Beauty. A. N. Didham: Fine Night, Arctotis, Young Bob. Show Boy. A. Reid: Stagestruek. Kildare Lad. J. Mears: First Out, Dark Chief; Some Sal. R. E. Williams: Kosher. D. Dawson: Wee Mac, Botany. R. Heasley or F. J. Boyle: Ruling Moment. B. S. Wilson: Bill Gundi. W. F. Ellis: Salmon Spear, Fonso, Shadamai. W. Hillis: No Charge. G. W. Wright: Sir Raimond. Sterling Lad. A. Stokes: Air ACe, Achieve.

Signal Officer will probably be ridden by R. J. Mackie.
