TO-DAY’S MEETING AT ADDINGTON

TROTTING

His Excellency May Win Shirley Handicap PLUNDER BAR IN FORM FOR FAREWELL HANDICAP Silver Volo has come into favour for the Introductory Handicap at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting at Addington to-day. A bold trotter by Lusty Volo from Silver Letitia, Silver Volo is trained at New Brighton by his owner, J. W. Fraser. Driven by L. C. Frost at the Canterbury Owners’ and Breeders’ Association’s trials at Addington on Tuesday, Silver Volo gave a solid display to finish in third place to Pori. Bowen and Sandy Duval in the 3min. 57sec. class race for trotters.

Most opposition to Silver Volo may come from Java, Port Bowen, Sure Money, and Sandy Duval. Java created a good impression at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting on September 6 when he gained an effortless win in the St. Albans Handicap. On the strength of that display he will probably be sent out favourite for the Introductory Han dicap.

Maudeen has registered six wins, two second placings, and a fourth placing since she began her career as a four-year-old last season. A grand stayer, Maudeen possesses an abundance of speed, and the President’s Handicap, the main two-mile race on the programme for pacers, should prove a stepping-stone to cup company for her. The President’s Handicap field includes some smart pacers in Lady Ngaio, Snowflake, Vimy Ridge, Checkmate, and Maori Home. A sister to a fine performer in Plunder Bar, Vimy Ridge registered 4min. 23sec. when she finished in fourth place to Maudeen, Lady Ngaio, and Bel Hamed in the Montgomery Handicap at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting on September 6. Vimy Ridge would need to show little improvement on that effort to extend the field in the big race to-day. Good fields of improving horses are carded, and, with the prospect of a fast track, the racing should be full of interest throughout the day.

His Excellency appears to be settling down to race solidly for Messrs O. T. and O. G. Evans, and he may follow up his second placing to Proprietor in the Brighton Handicap at Addington on September 6 with a win in the Shirley Handicap. Likely improvers in the Shirley Handicap field include French Gold and Gantree, which are trained at Addington by J. Purdon, Henry of Navarre. Ikaroa, Leading Man. and Systematic. Driven by T. Thompson, Leading Man showed his best form last season to win the Brunner Handicap at the Greymouth Trotting Club’s meeting on January 3 by six lengths from U Matavani. An aged gelding by U Scott from Fingerpost. Leading Man may develop into a useful pacer for Mr N. Me Vicar, for whom he is trained at Upper Riccarton by R. E. Williams Henry of Navarre has marred some of his efforts by failing to leave the mark correctly. A four-year-old horse by Springfield Globe from a winner in Huguenot. Henry of Navarre has more speed than most in his class, and he should eventually win good races for R. J. Berry.

Seaview Hancieap Golden Game, which finished in third place to Despatch and Good Review in the Avon Handicap at Addington oh September 6, has been working well for V. Alborn at Addington A speedy daughter of Gold Bar and Playtime, Golden Game may prove capable of springing a surprise from the 12 yards mark in the SeaView Handicap, in which she will meet some improving pacers, including Good Review, Red Hussar, Highland Dale, True Comrade, and Proprietor. At his last start Good Review recorded 2min 43sec for a mile and a quarter, and a repetition of that form should find him hard to beat.

Silverlight’s 11 placings in his last 16 starts include wins in the Little River Trot Handicap at the Banks Peninsula Racing Club’s meeting on October 26 and in the Kaikoura Handicap, of two miles, at the Kaikoura Trotting Club’s meeting on May 24. At bis last start Sil verlight was narrowly beaten by Minoru in the Oxford Handicap at Addington on September 6 in 4min 23 2-ssec, and on that form he should prove hard to beat from the 24 yards mark in the Bowhill Handicap.

Starshell, which will start off the 24 yards mark with Silverlight, has some good performances to her credit. A racylooking daughter of Sandydale and Skyglow, Starshell looks particularly well, and she appears assured of earning some of the prize money for Mr W. G.' Deyell. Of the others Admiration. Navy Queen, and Dandy Grattan appear to have the best prospects. H. F. Nicon Handicap After appearing to be hampered at the Start of the Spring Handicap at the New Brighton Trotting Club's meeting on September 6„ Sure Harvest gave a fine display of trotting to finish in third place to Calumella and Acclamation. Sure Harvest is nicely placed on the 24 yards mark in the H. F. Nicoll Handicap, and he appears the most likely to trouble the favourites. Acclamation, Excalibur, and Sure Note. Excalibur disappointed his admirers when he broke in the' 3min 51sec class trot at the trials at Addington on Tuesday, but his performance to win after settling down quickly was good, and he must be seriously- considered for this race. Acclamation, which is bracketed with Calumella, is one of the best young trotters seen out for a long time, and together with Sure Harvest and Excalibur she will probably carry most support. Right Royal, a winner at his last start, and Ben Adam, which finished in second place at his last start, have the best recent form of the Pacific Handicap field, and they may fight out the finish. Copper Trail indicated that he is in splendid order by winning a heat at the matinee meeting at Wash dyke on Monday and, together with Lyndale and Remlap, which had good form to their credit last season, he may divide the prize money with Right Royal and Ben Adam.
