TURN-ROUND OF SHIPS

1 u vr cimo Sir, —More yap-yap about turning the ships round faster, and we are still no nearer doing it! There is only one way to speed up the turn-round, and that is to work the ships 24 hours a day and seven days a webk. This means shift work for everybody connected with the loading and discharging of ships. As there is obviously not sufficient labour available at the moment to \£ork shifts, the Government should declare a state of national emergency and conscript labour from non-essential industry, as England had to do for her coal mines. Unfortunately for the country, there does not seem to be a single man in Parliament with sufficient guts to tackle the problem boldly. The Government is all too obviously thinking of the next election and the support it needs from the watersiders. —Yours, etc..

C. MORTON ANDERSON, JUN. September 25, 1947.
