ROAD SAFETY CAMPAIGN
PROCESSION THROUGH STREETS
As a culminating feature of the road safety campaign organised by the Canterbury Junior Chamber of Commerce during the last fortnight, a procession of vehicles displaying many and varied safety slogans followed* a route along the main streets of the city last evening. A note of warning was lent to the precession by the presence of a St. John ambulance and two breakdown waggons, and judging by the way 'the shopping crowds lined the footpaths the procession must have had some effect. Traffic was disrupted at every intersection while , the parade went by, and the drivers were forced to wait while a parade of slogans such as “Speed. Kills” and “Take Care” passed in front of them.
The procession was led by the Caledonian Pipe Band, and a fire engine brought up the rear. Mr J. Bruorton (formerly chief traffic inspector) marshalled the parade. Mr F. W. Ferguson (chairman of the Junior Chamber’s road safety committee) said yesterday that the traffic inspectors and the public had co-ope-rated well throughout the fortnight’s campaign There had been no fatal accidents in Christchurch during thal period, and he hoped that the public would continue to exercise the “road sense” that the chamber had endeavoured to foster.
