STRIKE BALLOTS BILL
CONFIDENCE EXPRESSED IN MR MCLAGAN
CHRISTCHURCH SOUTH BRANCH OF LABOUR PARTY Confidence in Mr A. McLagan as member of Parliament for Riccarton, and as Minister of Labour, was expressed by members at a meeting of the Christchurch South branch of the Labour Party. The meeting also gave support to any legislation that had as its object the obtaining of a democratic opinion from the union members concerned before they were called out on strike, and legislation that would ensUre that union members abided by their union rules. The meeting passed the resolution nfter members had taken strong exception to remarks reported to have been made at a meeting of railwaymen on Sunday. These were to the effect that Mr McLagan should be removed from office as he was considered a menace to the interests of the working class, and that he should be asked to resign. Members of the branch expressed the opinion that the c.ttendance at the railwaymen’s meeting was a very small section of the members concerned.
