The appointment of Dr. E. Marsden, at present head of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research as scientific liaison officer in London, was announced yesterday by the Minister in charge of the Department (Mr A. H. Nordmeyer). The Minister said the Government had been considering the desirability of having in London men cf the highest qualifications and prestige to keep New Zealand informed of the latest developments in scientific research and at the same time to play a part in the research programme of the British Commonwealth. The Government was reluctant to lose the valuable services of Dr. Marsden in New Zealand, but it felt that the contribution he was specially competent to make to Empire research made it desirable that he should be appointed to London. Dr. Marsden will take up his new duties at the end of October.— (P.A.)

Group Captain A. E. Clouston, D. 5.0.. D.F.C., A.F.C. and bar, a New Zealander. »will arrive about September 1 from the Air Ministry, London/ to take Up on exchange from the Royal Air Force the position of commanding officer of Ohakea air station. Wing Commander D. W. Baird, A.F.C., at present commanding officer at Ohakea, will leave for the United Kingdom shortly.—(P.A.)

Mr F. E. S. Long, the general secretary, tendered his resignation at a meeting of the board of directors bf the Young Men’s Christian Association last evening. Mr Long requested to be relieved of his position in consequence of the strain the work of the association imposed on his health. Mr W. A. Breach has arrived at Christchurch to take up his new position of District Traffic Manager of Railways. Mr M. H. Grigg, who has been acting-District Traffic Manager for some, months, is expected to return to Wellington soon. Mr Len Barnes has left for the North Island, where he will judge the vocal section at the Hawera Competitions Festival. On his return he will go to Greymouth to judge the vocal section at the Greymouth Competitions.

Mr H. G. Kilpatrick left last evening for Wellington to attend a national disputes committee of the freezing industry and a meeting of the national executive of the “Help Britain” campaign.

Mr F, Langbein, engineer-in-chief of the Public Works Department, arrived in Christchurch yesterday and left later to inspect the hydro-electric works at Lake Tekapo.

Colonel D. T. Maxwell’ who will return to New Zealand from' Japan on the Dunera to-day, is a son of Mr A. C. Maxwell, of Christchurch. Colonel Maxwell served with the 2nd N.Z.E.F. in the Middle East and for a period held the appointment of Assistant Adjutant and QuartermasterGeneral in the 2nd New Zealand Division. For a short period he commanded the New Zealand section of the occupation forces in Japan. Mr H. L. Bockett. Secretary of Labcur, arrived at Auckland by air from Vancouver yesterday. He attended ihe International Labour Office conference at Geneva and during a visit to England he examined the organisation of the Ministry of Labour and discussed shipping and transport problems with the staff of the High Commissioner and shipping companies.— (P.A.)
