SECOND DAY OF BOYS’ TOURNAMENT

Mr Dickie (president of the New Zealand Schoolboys’ Rugby League Council), welcomed members of the Auckland senior Rugby touring team, who were present as visitors at the second day of the annual schoolboys’ League tournament yesterday. He said that it was a pleasure to have members of another code present on such an occas-

Three games were played during the afternoon. Results were:—Canterbury 13, West Coast 2; Auckland 13, South Auckland 0; Taranaki 5, Wellington 2. Canterbury beat West Coast by better back play. The teams seemed to be evenly matched in the first half, each scoring two points.. Russell kicked a penalty for West Coast, and Pahi one for Canterbury. In the second half the Canterbury forwards displayed superior tactics, and a brilliant game was played by B. Lisle, the Canterbury hooker, who scored three tries. The most outstanding Canterbury back was R. Foreman, who made the openings which enabled Lisle to win the game for Canterbury. The referee was Mr E. J. Smith (Canterbury). In the second game, South Auckland did not live up to its reputation. Auckland, on the other hand, played a more confident and cohesive game than was expected, and showed it .might win the shield again this year. Mitcham, the Auckland captain, gave his side many openings, and made the first try for Carlson. Other tries were scored by Johnson and Colquhoun. Johnson converted two. Mr Avery (South Auckland) was referee. Although they were, for the most part, considerably below the competition weight, the Wellington team, which was beaten in the final game by Taranaki, played a very plucky game. McKay, the Taranaki first five-eighths, was the spearhead of most of the Taranaki movements. Scorers for Taranaki were: Adams, and McKay (penalty). Coffee kicked a penalty for Wellington. Wellington, in spite of the disadvantage of inferior weight, tried hard to equalise in the second half. The referee was Mr Wellsmore (Canterbury).
