GOVERNOR’S BAY ROADS

Sir, —Shortly, we understand, the Public Works Department will be road making in the Governor’s Bay area. In the past its reputation for damaging and cutting bush and trees in this district has been bad, and we would appreciate your giving us this publicity in openly asking the department to exercise in future the greatest care before ordering the unnecessary removal of even a single tree, let alone whole areas of growing bush necessary to the bird life of our district. especially tuis and bellbirds.— Yours,’etc., RESIDENT. August 22, 1947. [He was entirely in sympathy with the correspondent about the cutting and damaging of bush unnecessarily, and as far as was possible no more trees or bush would be removed than necessary for highway or road improvement, said the District Engineer of the Public Works Department (Mr E. F. Evans) when asked to comment on this letter.]
