LIBERALS REFUSE TO COOPERATE U.S. INTEREST IN MOVBS FOR NEW CABINET (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 10.30 p.m.) LONDON. Aug. 84. United States diplomatic circle? in Athens are closely watching the political situation in Greece caused by the resignation of the Maximos Government The American Ambassador to Greece (Mr Lincoln MacVeagh) called on King Paul last night. Later he said: “We are looking for a more liberally based Greek Government. The Americans are here to guide and advise. We are not interested in parties or persons.’’ The Liberal leader (Mr Soioulis) has rejected the offer of the Foreign Minister (Mr TSaldaris) for co-operation with the Populist Party on an equal basis in the new Cabinet. The Athens correspondent of “The Times” says that though the Greek Ministers who resigned have refused to give their reasons, it is known that

the controversy in the Cabinet centred chiefly in the personality of General Zervas, the Minister of Public Order. “It had been made plain,” the correspondent adds, “that manv of the measures taken in General Zervas’s name had disturbed public opinion in the United States and Britain, and the Ministers pointed out that for Greece to obtain the maximum aid from abroad General Zervas should resign. “General Zervas retorted, with truth, that all the measures taken had had the whole Cabinet’s prior approval.”
