DEATH SENTENCES COMMUTED

ESPIONAGE TRIAL IN JUGOSLAVIA

(Rec. 7 p.m.) BELGRADE, August 24. The Presidium of the Jugoslav National Assembly has commuted the death sentences passed last week on Dr. Boris Furlan and Ljabo Sire to 20 years’ imprisonment and the loss of civil and political rights for life. The Presidium confirmed the death sentence on Catomir Nagods. They are three of 15 Slovene intellectuals whom the Supreme Court found guilty of spying. The correspondent of “The Times” m Belgrade says the sentences have caused vigorous protests in Britain. Many English people knew and respected Dr. Furlan when as a refugee :n London during the war he broadcast his support for the Partisan cause.
