MOUNT ALBERT BY-ELECTION

MR W. FREER LABOUR CANDIDATE (P.A.) AUCKLAND. August 25. The selection c-f Mr Warren Freer as the Labour Parly’s candidate in the Mount Albert by-election was announced in Auckland to-day. His nomination was one of nine and was endorsed to-day by the national executive of the party at its quarterly meeting in Wellington. Mr Freer contested the Eden seat at the last general election and was beaten by Mr W. H. Fortune by 7055 votes to 5774. Mr Freer was born in Sandringham ■ 27 years ago. He is secretary oi the Auckland Labour Representation Committee and of the Auckland Labour Club. He was educated at the Auckland Grammar School and was on the literary staff of the “Hawke’s Bay Daily Mail.” He was later in charge of the Kaikohe branch of the “Northern Advocate.” He served in the army for three years. He is organising secretary of the Auckland Labour Youth Club. He was one of the foundation members of the Mount Albert Amateur Athletic Club and held three track records. He represented Auckland at the New Zealand athletic championships. He is married and has two sons. Labour will open its campaign next week. The party hopes that severe, members of the Cabinet will be able to address the electors. The National Party will select its candidate on September 1. The Leader of the Opposition (Mr S. G. Holland) will definitely take part in the campaign and it is expected that other prominent members of the party will visit the electorate.
