POWER SUPPLIES IN BRITAIN

DANGER OF CUTS IN WINTER

LONDON, August 22. At a fuel conference in London to explain the Government’s plans to avoid having to cut off electricity during the winter, when the load exceeded the allowable peak, Sir Guy NottBower, deputy-secretary to the Ministry of Fuel and Power, said that the Government aimed at a general reduction for industry of one-third of last winter’s maximum loads. The Central Electricity Board estimated that even if staggering plans were reasonably complete and successful, there would still be an appreciable danger of having to cut off electricity at certain periods. Sir John Kennedy, chairman of the ■Electricity Commission, said that generating plant installations sufficient to meet the nation’s needs would be set dp within three or four years. He said that the commission was not relying on getting a one-third reduction. Among the schemes which the regional boards were preparing was one for firms to work fewer days but longer hours.
