SATURDAY WORK IN MINES

RESPONSE TO BRITISH APPEAL

“IRRESPONSIBLES” GIVEN WARNING

(Rec. 9 p.m.) LONDON, August 23. British miners had offered to work six hours and a half every Saturday from September until May, 1948, because of their anxiety to help the Government in the crisis, said the general secretary of the Mine Workers’ Union (Mr Arthur Homer). “They are giving up, after three months, a reform for which they had striven for 40 years,” he said. “At least 90 per cent, of the miners are working loyally and regularly, but there are 10 per cent, of irresponsibles in our midst. We cannot allow a minority to defeat our aims as workers to save our country in this terrible crisis.”
