TOWN HALL
Sir,—Overseas artists and several progressive Christchurch citizens have lately made public statements concerning our urgent need for a town hall. A visiting conductor recently suggested the possibility of eminent artists by-passing this city altogether in the future owing to the unsuitability of oUr theatres. This, surely, is a serious state of affairs. The report in this morning’s paper of the City Council meeting gives little hope of anything being done in the near future. I suggest that we start the ball rolling now by inviting public subscriptions, by art unions, by local artists and organisations giving voluntary concerts and giving the proceeds to a fund. By these and other means a large proportion of tfie estimated cost could be raised and consequently the cost of hiring the future hall need not be excessive.—Yours, etc;, MUSIC LOVER. August 20, 1947.
