CURRENCY ALLOWED TRAVELLERS
REDUCTION IN AMOUNT (Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, August 21, The Treasury announced that travellers from Britain from Saturday, will be allowed to take only £5 sterling with them instead of £2O sterling each, as previously allowed. The Treasury explained that the new order does not affect the limit of £35 sterling which travellers are permitted to take abroad in travellers’ cheques. Th e order reduces the amount of sterling notes which travellers are permitted to carry for purchases on their journeys to overseas destinations. The Board of Trade has issued an emergency order to Customs officers that no persons leaving Britain after to-morrow must be allowed to take with them expensive personal jewellery or furs. The order is designed to stop people taking valuables for sale overseas, thus evading the currency restrictions. Travellers will be permitted to wear wedding and engagement rings and take one fur coat or watch, but the watches must not be “too expensive."
