NO BARRIER TO MIGRATION
BRITAIN’S POLICY UNCHANGED
(Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, August 21. Britain’s present economic situation had not affected the Government’s attitude towards migration, said the'Lord President of the Council (Mr Herbert Morrison) to-day.
“If people wish to migrate, certain facilities are available, and it is not for us to stop them,” he continued. “On the other hand we have manpower and population problems, and therefore we are not urging people to migrate. The Dominions themselves are exceedingly anxious to get all the good British citizens they can. Our view is that there is a tug-of-war both ways. We do not think we can prevent people going.” Mr Morrison said that the Dominions had manifested the greatest wish to help Britain in her present situation.
‘‘Their spirit is magnificent, and we are exceedingly grateful,” he said. “They are informed steadily of economic developments and problems here, and the Dominions keep us informed of their own problems and the ways in which they are able to assist us.”
