MR SPEAKER VOTES
DIVISION CARRIED BY ONE (From Our Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, August 22. The Government carried a division by one vote in the House of Representatives this afternoon, when Mr Speaker (Mr R. McKeen) voted with the Government on an amendment to the Magistrate’s Court Bill, moved by Mr T. C. Webb (Opposition, Rodney). Three pairs were granted, and the Government won by 36 votes to 35. The member .not accounted for was Mr M. Ratana (Government, Western Maori). Mr Webb sought to amend the clause dealing with the appointment of magistrates. His amendment involved the deletion of a sub-clause stating that the office of magistrate might be held in conjunction’ with any other office which the Governor-General should deem not incompatible, and substitution of the following: “Every magi*trate shall carry out or perform such other duties not incompatible with his office as the Governor-General may from time to time require of him. provided that a magistrate shall not become entitled to receive any additional salaiy or other remuneration for the performance of any such duties.
