THE RIGHT-HAND RULE

Sir, —Two letters by your correspondents condemn the right-hand rule. This has been the means of saving mafiy lives, and most drivers seem well- satisfied with it, especially those who had to drive before it became law. Even if the left could be proved better, it would be disastrous to change now. An example of this is the bungle the Transport Department has made of the right-hand turn at intersections. It still has motorists gaping at each other across these intersections, while they, the chief offenders; calmly switch on to the “Road Safety Campaign.” Another correspondent would make cyclists carry rear lights, out your leading article, “Reflectors for Cyclists,” showed recently how hard it is to make cyclists even. carry reflectors. Obviously, it would put cyclists at a disadvantage, as the light might go out unknown to them. Two reflectors, or even one. would be cheaper and safer.—Yours, etc., T.A.S. August 22, 1947.
