ELDERLY MAORI’S DEATH

SON-IN-LAW CHARGED WITH MURDER

(P.A.) AUCKLAND. August 3. An elderly Maori found suffering from a severe head injury in a paddock near his home in Kaikohe died after a seizure about 12.30 a.m. to-day. His son-in-law has been arrested nn a charge of murder. The dead man was M r Akaripa Pou, aged 69, a farmer. When relatives found Mr Pou at 11 p.m. yesterday he was bleeding profusely, and although conscious was unable to speak. Lying beside him were a golf club and a bottle containing soft drink. After being taken to his home he was attended by two district nurses. No doctors were available.

The man arrested was Ngaone Te Rata Tahere, aged 29.

Mr Pou was a director of the Kaikohe Co-operative Dairy Company, and a progressive farmer. He was a prominent leader among local Maoris.
