BRITISH TROOPS IN INDIA
DATE OF WITHDRAWAL (Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, August 1. The New Delhi correspondent of Reuters confirms a New Delhi radio report that British troops will commence to leave India on August 17. An announcement which came from Armed Forces Headquarters in India, •said: “British troops in India and Pakistan will have no operational role, nor will they have any responsibility for the maintenance of law and order, both of which rest with the Governments of the Indian Union and Pakistan. All British Army units located in the Dominions of India and Pakistan, until such time as they are withdrawn, will be under the command of MajorGeneral L. G. Whistler, who will be designated General Officer Commanding, British Troops in India and Pakistan, from August 15.”
In London, a spokesman for the War Office, commenting on the New Delhi report that the first batch of British troops wauld leave India on August 17. described the report as “guesswork.’’ He added: “We have given no date for the withdrawal. It has not been settled.”
