RADIO DIRECTIONS FOR OPERATION

SHIP’S DOCTOR HELPED (P.A.) WELLINGTON, July 30. The chief steward of the New Zealand Shipping Company’s liner Ruahine, bound for England, became critically ill last week with an abdominal complaint for which he had been operated on twice before. The ship’s surgeon (Dr. Richards), who was without medical assistance and was not conversant with the complications of a third operation on a man for the same illness, sent a call to the Rimutaka, 1000 miles away. For two days the Rimutaka’s doctor (Dr. Meaghar) and a passenger, Dr. James M. Tyler, of Auckland, kept in constant radio touch with the Ruahine, and when an operation became imperative Dr. Richards was able to follow the directions wirelessed him and the operation was successfully performed.
