GAS SUPPLY

FURTHER RESTRICTIONS POSSIBLE

“More restrictions in the supply of gas may be made at short notice because of the interruption in the supply of coal from the West Coast caused by the derailment on the Midland line on Monday,” said Mr G. Irvine, the secretary of the Christchurch Gas Company, yesterday. “At 6 a.m. to-day the works held approximately 60 tons of coal in stock, and advices of coal in transit totalled a further 170 tons, with future deliveries at the moment uncertain,” said Mr Irvine. “The company carbonises about 150 tons of coal daily, and consumers will readily appreciate that heavy consignments will have to be received quickly if the present gas supply is to be maintained. Should further restrictions become necessary the company will make every effort to give consumers early notice through newspapers and radio, but this may not be possible. All consumers are therefore warned, in the interests of their own safety, that, until further advised, it will be necessary for them to turn off all automatic appliances whenever the pressure falls below normal.”
