QUESTION ASKED ABOUT ALLEGED MONOPOLY

(P.A.) . WELLINGTON, July 29. A report that one firm had been given a monopoly of cartage for a Government department in Wellington was mentioned in a notice of question given by Mr W. A. Sheat (Opposition, Patea) in the House of Representatives to-day. Mr Sheat gave notice to ask the Minister of Supply. «.Mr A. H. Nordmeyer) if his attention had been drawn to a statement by the Crown Prosecutor in a recent Court hearing Oj a charge against a company director of stealing 'from the Ministry of Supply nine tons of wire to the effect that the company concerned “at all material times had a monopoly of cartage in Wellington for the Ministry of Supply.” Mr Sheat asked ,r. what circumstances and on' what conditions this monopoly was grantea. and whether any similar monopolies had been granted by the department. He also asked if the Minister could state whether other departments were accustomed to grant similar monopolies.
