BIG OFFER. REFUSED

TROTTING

DILLON HALL TO REMAIN IN SOUTHLAND

Mr G. Voungson, ot Gore, the owner of the pacing stallion, Dillon Hall, recently refused a big offer from H. Matson, and Company, Christchurch, for his horse. The offer made was one of 5000 guineas, with delivery to be given in February next. As Dillon Hall is fully booked for the coming season, the Christchurch offer in effect meant one of 8000 guineas, states the "Southland Times." When discussing his reason for refusing the offer, Mr Youngson said that had he let Dillon Hall go out of Southland, he felt that he would nave been breaking faith with Southland breeders now that his horse had proved himself.

Dillon Hall, which was foaled in 1932, was bred in Kentucky by Mr H. Burgoyne, and he took a two-minute record before being imported to New Zealand in 1939 by Mrs I. \oungson. The Laurel Hall, the sire of Dillon Hall, was the sire of several pacers in the 2min ssec list, including Walter Dear (2min 2Jsec), Laurel Hanover (Imin 594 sec), Prince Hall (2min 04sec). Maxhall (2min IJsec), Printo Hall (2min Usee), Reynolds (2min 3isec), Arthur Mower (2min 2sec pacing, 2min 3Jsec trotting). By Peter the Great, The Laurel Hall is out of Baby Bertha, by Silk Cord from Bertha Derby. A brilliant performer, Dillon Hall’s dam, Margaret Dillon, broke two minutes on six occasions, her fastest time being Imin 58 l-ssec. By Dillon Axworthy, Margaret Dillon is out of Margaret Prima, by Peter the Great from Margaret O, by Onward from Marguerite A, by Axtell from Marguerite. The sire of more than 30 winners since coming to New Zealand, Dillon Hall sired Acropolis at his first season at the stud. Now assessed on 2min 7sec, 2min 41sec, and 4min 21sec, Acropolis has already earned more than £9OOO in stakes and he may make the grade to cup company this season.

Acropolis was bred by the late Mr WClent, Balclutha, and as a foal at foot he was purchased, together with his dam, Seaworthy, for £5O by the late Mr T. J. Atkinson. Acropolis was educated and trained for his early races by the late R. J. Berry, and he proved one of the best of his age when, as a two-year-old, he won the Welcome Handicap and the New Zealand Sapling Stakes. He continued to improve, and in the following season his list of placings included a win in the Great Northern Derby. Unfortunately Mr Atkinson did not live to see his horse work his way into good company. After his death, Acropolis was purchased by Mr J. E. Adams, and he now races in Mrs Adams’s interests. A solid pacer with a liking for heavy tracks, Acropolis has won £6790 for Mr and Mrs Adams. Dillon Hall, the oldest progeny of which are now only six years old, finished in fifth place in the sires’ list published in the “Trotting Calendar,” his progeny securing £30,720 for 73 wins and 173 minor placings. U. Scott is the leading sire for money won during the season, his progeny earning £47,393 10s for 75 wins and 131 minor placings; Grattan Loyal is in second place with £46,923 for 91 wins and 200 minor placings; Jack Potts is in third place with £39,057 10s, for. 76 wins and 169 minor placings. Quite SUre, which finished in fourth place on the money won list, has a big lead in the number of races won, his' stock securing 109 wins and 245 minor placings. Dillon Hall will be represented by some outstanding young pacers, including Snowflake, Melvian, Dragoman, Stirling Castle, Town Talk, Brown Owl, Blue Heaven, and Maori Hpme, next season, and he should eventually top the winning sires’ list, 'jottings F.
