PRESENTATION TO MR R. S. DUFF
Mr R. S. Duff, the ethnologist and assistant-director at the Canterbury Museum, will begin leave of absence from his post on Thursday to take up a British Council scholarship for postgraduate work in anthropology at th£ London School of Economics. He will sail early next month on the Rangitiki and expects to return to New Zealand late next year. Mr Duff, who joined the museum staff in 1938, was met recently by the members of several organisations in which he has played a prominent part, and many tributes were paid to his work.
A presentation on behalf of the museum staff was made last week by the director (Dr. R. A. Falla), and another presentation was made by the Ngati-Otautahi Maori Association, of which he is a committee member. Mr Duff replied in Maori to tributes that were paid by several speakers, and some of the elder Maoris who were present congratulated him on his fluency.
To-day Mr Duff will be entertained at afternoon tea in Hay’s lounge by the council of the Association of Friends of the Museum apd a presentation will be made by the chairman, Mr J. L. Hay.
