Brake, Waipu, and for her he gained his only placing last season when, after being one of the leaders throughout, he was beaten into second place in the Juvenile Handicap at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting on May 25 by Darkie Grattan, which is now working well at Addington after a long spell. At his first appearance this season. County Antrim finished in third place to Free Fight, and Snowflake in the Canterbury Three-year-old Stakes at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting on August 24, and he followed up with a win over Henry of Navarre in the Riccarton Stakes at the same club’s meeting on November 2. A third placing to Free Fight and Snowflake in the New Zealand Derby Stakes at the same meeting was followed by a sterling performance to lead all the way and win the New Zealand Champion Stakes from Gay Piper and Free Fight at the Ashburton Trotting Clubs’ meeting on December 26.

County Antrim’s next three starts yielded two minor placings and he finished the season with a fine win over Admiration and Direct Heir in the Ferry Handicap at the Wellington Trotting Club’s meeting on May 3. After that meeting the colt received treatment for his feet and he was then turned out for a spell. The treatment has improved him and as he now appears to be better than ever. County Antrim should soon add to his good record in the new season. Thomas’s team also includes a wellbuilt rising two-year-old colt and a rising yearling filly, which are both by Springfield Globe from. Bonny Azure. The filly is a particularly attractive type and she is highly rated by her trainer. Bonny Azure, the dam of the youngsters. was bred by Mr L. J. Brake and she proved a grand performer, taking a mile and a Quarter record fo 2min 42sec. Foaled in 1931, she is by Blue Mountain King from Bonnie Bingen, bv Great Bingen from Muriel Dillon, by Harold Dillon from the imported Muriel Mfaddison, which was by James Maddison.

Jottings Sandy Chimes, which is now trained at Templeton by D. Bennett, showed his best form for the season when he finished in second place to Pimpernel in the Rotokohu Trot at the- Reefton Jockey Club’s meeting on January 11. A four-year-old gelding, Sandy Chimes Is by Sandydale from Chatto Chimes.

F. C. Withell’s team at Hornby includes a colt by Gold Bar from Lady Justice, which left the promising Tekau to the same sire.

Repertory has settled down since being trained at Addington by J. Magee, and he appears to have reasonable prospects in the coming season. R. A. Hartley’s team at Burwood includes a gelding by Jack Potts from Daisy Audubon, which is by Great Audubon from Dayspring, by California from the Vancleve mare. Daybreak. W. R. Actress. Noble Scott, which is now at Messrs H. and F. Abrahams’s stud in Victoria, Australia, was bred at Roydon Lodge by Mr J. R. McKenzie. By a successful sire in U Scott. Noble Scott is out of the Peter Volo mare, Widow Volo, which took a record of 2min 6fsec before being imported from America in 1933. Quite Game Leased Quite Game, which showed his best form for the season to win the Reefton Cup from Horatio Nelson at the Reefton Trotting Club’s meeting on November 30, has been leased by R. A. Hartley, who is now training him at Burwood. An aged Sure gelding, Quite Game is out of Queen Author which was successful at the pacing gait. By Author Dillon, Queen Author is out of Indian Child, the dam of other winners in Indian Author. King Author, and Minnetonka.

Matinee Meeting at Addington The Canterbury Owners’ and Breeders’ Association proposes to hold at matinee meeting at Addington on August 19. Cameron’s team at New Brighton, and she appears to be well forward in her preparation for engagements early in the new season A four-year-old mare by Grattan Loyal from Queen Maud, Maudeen attracted attention to P®£ prospects by registering three wins and three minor placings ‘this season, her wins being recorded in the Trial Handicap at the Marlborough Trotting Club’s meeting on February 1, the Advance Handicap at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club s meeting on February 8, and the Acton Handicap at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting on June 2. Queen Maud, the dam of Maudeen. also left another winner in Sports Guide to Gaillard. B 7 Travis Axworthy, Queen Maud is out of Sister Maud, by Nelson Bingen from Lady Derby, by Rothschild from Norice. At Tai Tapu Slavonic is a recent addition to W Baker’s team at Tai Tapu. A brilliant youngster, Slavonic was educated and trained for his early races by M. Holmes, and for him he showed fine foiwn as a two-year-old to win the New Zealand Sapling Stakes from Jack’s Son at the Asnburton Trotting Club’s meeting on June 5, 1944. In the following season he won the Canterbury Three-year-old Stakes from Worthy Gold at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s National meeting and the Wellington Stakes at the Wellington Trotting Club’s spring meeting. A gelding by Lusty Volo from Rustic Maid, Slavonic has been lightly raced during the last 18 months, and if Baker can persuade him to show his best he should pay his way next season.

From a Good Family Mr C. L. Rhodes recently purchased a three-year-old pacer by Grattan Loyal from a winner in Dark Girl, which left a winner in Anazah to Jack Potts. Dark Girl, which was bred at New Brighton by J. D. Smith, is by Matchlight from Raven’s Girl, a Ravenschild mare, which left a family of winners including Hope Dillon (the dam of Pot Luck), Mac Dillon, Eureka Boy, and Bexley Girl. Likely Improver Gantree is working well at Addington for J. Purdon, who trains him for Mr T. Baker, and he appeals as one of the best prospects in his class for the new season A four-year-old gelding, Gantree has raced well this season for a win, three second placings. a third placing, and a fourth placing. A son of a good pacer in Lucky Jack, Gantree is out of Alice de Oro, which is by Rey de Oro from a Great Audubon mare.

Out of Our Fay Besides Arborfield, the New Brighton trainer, G. F. Robinson, is working a wellgrown two-year-old filly by Pacing Power from Our Fay, which is by Rey de Oro from Galindo Doll. A good performer over all distances. Pacing Power, which is by Jack Potts from Free Advice, has wintered well in F. C. Withell’s care at Hornby.
