INSURANCE WORKERS’ AWARD

AGREEMENT REACHED ON WAGE INCREASES Covering all members of indoor clerical staffs and inspectors in receipt of £550 a year or less, inclusive of the Court’s two cost of living bonuses, a new award issued by the Court of Arbitration for insurance workers in New Zealand provides for increased rates of pay. The award embodies the terms of a settlement reached by assessors in Conciliation Council.

A statement by the assessors reads:— “The increases in the rates of pay were made having in mind the possibility of an increase being made by an order of the Court of Arbitration under the Economic Stabilisation Regulations, and in the event of any such order, the increase in the rates should be considered as satisfaction or part satisfaction iof any increase which the Court may award."’ Minimum rates of pay for male workers rise from £125 for the first year to £5OO for the eighteenth year and after. Female workers will receive £125 for the first year, and £286 for the eleventh year and after. For the purpose of determining the commencing salary, time worked as a clerk or shorthand typist, will count as if it had been worked in an insurance office. If a worker 55 years or over without insurance experience is employed, he will receive not less than the salary provided for a male worker in his tenth year, and increments will be arranged between the employer and the union. Industrial superintendents in charge of four or more agents, will receive at least £7 a week. Clauses governing salaries were made retrospective to April 1, and the award will remain in force until April 1, 1949.
