CHINESE SHIP INTERCEPTED

ALLEGED seizure by DUTCH PATROLS

(Rec. 9.30 p.m.) SINGAPORE. July 26. Dutch naval patrols, operating in the Straits of Malacca, are alleged to have seized the Chinese motor-vessel Tongking on July 21 and to have confiscated its cargo of rubber from Indonesia, valued at more than £5OOO.

.The vessel left Asahan, on the east coast of Sumatra, on July 19. with Indonesian clearance papers. Dutch patrols intercepted it on July 21 in th*e Straits of Malacca and ordered the vessel to return to Asahan, where the captain was accused of trading with the enemy.

The captain told the patrol commander that he was a Chinese national and a resident of Malaya, but the commander angrily said they did not care. Chinese traders in Malacca are incensed at the seizure, which is the first since the outbreak of hostilities in Indonesia.
