PLOUGHING MATCH AT TIMARU

FIRST FOR EIGHT YEARS “It is obvious that the younger generation of ploughmen are not losing their skill in the art,” commented one of the judges, Mr J. C. Hay (Morven), at the conclusion of the ploughing match held by the Timaru Ploughing Match Association and the South Canterbury Young Farmers’ Clubs at Kingsdown on Saturday. This was the first match held by the Timaru Association since 1939, and keen interest was taken in it by about 2000 spectators. Gate takings amounted to £B2 10s.

In excellent condition, the ground gave the ploughmen every opportunity to show their skill. The weather was good. The standard of cut ploughing, according to Mr Hay, was high, and the prize-winning lots would have compared favourably with the best in matches held before the war. Mr Hay said he would suggest that in the tractor ploughing there was a tendency to make the work too fine and narrow. The best feering on the ground was in ploughing done by J. Gibson (Taiko), with C. Parry’s team, while W. W. Divan (Rosewill) ploughed the best finish with his father’s team. Other special awards were won as. follows:—Best team, C. H. S. Jonnston; second best team, C. H. S. Johnston; best turned-out team, W. W. Divari; best decorated team, W. W. Divan; best kept harness, W. W. Divan; second best kept harness. W. H. King; best groomed team, W. W. Divan: youngest ploughman, L. Breeding; oldest ploughman, H. Voss (Willowbridge); ploughman travelling longest distance. A. A. Hulston (West Melton). Before presenting the trophies, the chairman of the Timaru Ploughing Match Committee. Mr W. W. Divan), commenting on the number of townspeople present,, said: “This is one instance of co-opera-tion between town and country.” Thei Mayor of Timaru (Mr A. E. S. Hanan) also spoke.
