CANTERBURY BEATEN BY OTAGO

•* The Press ” Special Service DUNEDIN, July 27. Canterbury was beaten by 23 points to 5 in the first inter-provincial table tennis match with Otago, played in the North-East Valley Town Hall on Saturday evening.

The best set of the evening was that between the Canterbury champion, J. J. Borough, and R. A. Algie, the Otago champion and three times New Zealand champion. In the first game. Borough played defensively, and Algie faulted, to give Borough the game, 21-18. Borough then attacked, and Algie beat him in the next two games 21-9. 21-14.

Algie was out of training, but some of his shots showed championship form. N. M. Brown was an excellent partner for him in the doubles.

Results were as follows (Otago names first): —

Men’s Singles.—R. A. Algie beat J. J. Borough, 2-1; W. J. Fogarty beat J. R. Flint, 2-1; N. M. Brown beat A. P. Clapshaw, 2-0; Algie beat Flint, 2-0; L. Howe beat D. I. Gray, 2-0; Fogarty lost to Borough, 0-2; Brown beat Gray, 2-0; Howe beat Clapshaw, 2-0. Men’s Doubles.—Algie and Brown beat Clapshaw and Gray, 2-0; Fogarty and Howe lost to Borough and Flint, 1-2; Algie and Brown beat Borough and Flint, 2-0; Fogarty and, Howe beat Clapshaw and Gray, 2-1.

Women’s Singles.—R. Thomas beat A. Peppier, 2-1; D. Leathly beat M. Dennis, 2-1; M. Duckworth beat W. Dryden, 2-1; J. Leathly beat J. Clapshaw, 2-0; Thomas beat Dennis, 2-0; D. Leathly beat Peppier, 2-1; Duckworth lost to Clapshaw. 0-2; J. Leathly beat Dryden, 20.

Women’s Doubles.—Thomas and Duckworth beat Dryden and Clapshaw, 2-0; D. and J. Leathly lost to Peppier and Dennis, 0-2; Thomas and Duckworth los* to Peppier and Dennis, 0-2; D. and J. Leathly beat Dryden and Clapshaw, 2-0. Mixed Doubles.—Algie and Thomas beat Borough and Peppier, 2-1; Fogarty and D.
