ROMAN CATHOLIC AND JEWISH FAITHS
CRITICISM BY BISHOP OF AUCKLAND (P.A.) AUCKLAND, July 26. Criticism of a statement about the Roman Catholic religion by Mr Justice Fleming in a reserved decision in a will case as quoted in a. Press Association message from Christchurch was expressed by Bishop Liston, in a statement to Jhe newspapers. Bishop Liston referred to the following lassage in Mr Justice Fleming’s reported remarks: “Also, it may be that a Roman Catholic may believe all tenets of any of these Jewish forms of religion although he may also believe a little more. All his beliefs are probably founded on the Jewish faith.’’ After referring to various aspects of the Catholic and Jewish religions. Bishop Liston stated: “The Catholic believes, and it is the heart of his faith, that Christ is the Son of God, truly God, from eternity, as well as man, born into our human family to be its teacher and redeemer. The Jew rejects this belief.” Bishop Liston added that Catholics respected the Jewish religion and the Jew. but Catholic and Jewish beliefs were a world apart.
