ADVERSE TRADE BALANCES
BRITAIN’S POSITION IMPROVED
(Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, July 25. Britain’s unfavourable trade ’balances with countries other than those in the hard currency areas decreased from £8,400.000 sterling to £7.300,000 during the second quarter of 1947, according to the Board of Trade Journal. Exports of metal goods have increased in relative importance since the third quarter of 1946. and iron and steel have almost reached their pre-war average. Exports of machinery were 43 per cent, more than in the corresponding period of 1938. The export of 28,229 motor-cars during the quarter represented a record, and was two and a half times the 1938 average.
