ECONOMIC CRISIS FORECAST
CABINET SAID TO BE MAKING PLANS (Rec. 10 p.m.) LONDON, July 27. The political correspondent of “News of the World” says: “With the American loan likely to run out by November, and no Marshall Plan aid possibly available before March, 1948, the Cabinet has been considering the following ‘Battle of the Gap’ measures:— “(1) Heavy reduction of food imports, including practically all imported meat. • “(2) Reducing rations to less than they were at the height of the war. “(3) Stopping petrol entirely for pleasure motoring. “(4) Prohibiting foreign travel for Britons, except for business.” The correspondent adds that Mr Attlee recently threatened some of his colleagues that he would resign unless members of the Government showed a greater sense of reality end statesmanship in preparation for the inevitable crisis.
