T. R. GEORGE RETIRING FROM TRAINING

T. R. George has decided to retire from training, and from the beginning of the new season next week will concentrate his activities on his thoroughbred stud at Masterton. Throughout 40 years of training, George has been one of the most capable and popular trainers. In nine out of 12 years until 1941 he was the Dominion’s leading trainer, and he has been responsible for the preparation of winners of more than 600 races. He won four Auckland Cups and two New Zealand Cups, and the inmates of his stable accounted for many of the leading events on the racing calendar. Beau Vite, Cuddle Synagogue, Croupier, Serenata, Makeup, Landmark, and Gigli were among the best horses he trained of later years. Earlier he had Rangitira and Gladiole under his charge. A few years ago, George founded a stud and began with the stallions Defoe and Croupier. Six years ago he moved to Masterton, where he established the Rosswood Stud with the two high-class performers. A dashing jumper. King’s Ace has won three hurdles this year. At Ellerslie at Easter, he won the St. Heliers Hack of one mile and three-quarters, with 9-11, and on the second day of the Great Northern meeting on June 2 he beat Kentish and Prize Ring in the Remuera Hurdle. , run over two miles. King’s Ace is by British King from Royal Seagull, by Royal Stag from Seabar, by Advance from Seagull by St. Leger and is trained by the Remuera trainer, T. W. Reilly. Two other Auckland candidates for the Grand National Hurdles in Spirrilum and The Dude have also arrived at Riccarton. New Handicapper The committee of the Avondale Jockey Club has appointed Mr A. Tronson as handicapper in place of Mr F. J. McMenamin, whose resignation took effect after the declaration of weights for the second day of the winter meeting on Saturday.
