IMPORTATION OF FIREWORKS
PROTEST BY DUNEDIN SCHOOLMASTER <P.A.) DUNEDIN July 24. A large consignment of fireworks which recently reached Dunedin' has been almost completely disposed of, mostly by children who had not seen fireworks before. Frequent explosions in suburban areas testify to the popularity of fireworks. Mr A. M. Davidson, principal of the Macandrew Road Intermediate School, has protested. “First things should come first in the issue of import licences.’’ he said, “and they should
provide for those goods which are essential, in preference to those of doubtful value to the community.” He complained that at a time when the whole community joined in a campaign to send food and clothing overseas, such things as fireworks were being brought into the country from England. They occupied shipping space when the building industry could not procure many of thd essential tools and materials for the provision of adequate housing. He added that fireworks were dangerous playrhings.
