POWER SAVINGS
QUOTA MAY BE EXCEEDED Although power savings in the M.E.D.’s extended area yesterday amounted to 10.6 per cent. —.6 per cent, above the quota imposed by the State Hydro-electric Department—the figure could not be considered wholly satisfactory, said the general manager of the M.E.D. (Mr E. Hitchcock) yesterday. In recent weeks, said Mr Hitchcock, the tendency had been for reduced power consumption during the week, but towards week-ends the 'demand increased. Although the M.E.D. was within its quota so far this week, it was likely that heavier demand at the week-end might cause the quota to be exceeded
The saving yesterday in the original area controlled by the M.E.D. was 11.8 per cent. The weather generally was calm and cloudy in the catchment areas at Lake Coleridge and Waitaki yesterday. The level at Lake Coleridge showed a slight rise to 1664.57 feet yesterday, compared with 1664.55 feet on Wednesday. At Waitaki the flow was about 5500 cusecs, compared with about 5400 cusecs on Wednesday.
