GUERRILLA ATTACK ON GREEK TOWN

“SAVAGERY WITHOUT PARALLEL” (Rec. 10 p.m.) ATHENS, July 24. Four hundred Greek rebels who attacked Nigrita, 40 miles north-east of Salonika, attempted as usual to destroy the electric power supply and to release prisoners from the local gaol, but their main purpose was apparently to slaughter the families of their fellow rebels who have surrendered so as to discourage further desertions. The Governor-General of northern Greece, who visited the town after the attack, in which 30 citizens were killed, described it as an outrage of unparalleled savagery. Those killed included the mother and three sisters of Frangou, the rebel who recently surrendered and gave evidence before the United Nations Balkans Inquiry Commission, the wife and two children of the local E.A.M. secretary, who refused to join the rebels in the mountains and instead went to Salonika, and all the members of the local doctor’s family, including a six-month-old baby.
