BRITISH TRANSPORT SUNK
EXPLOSION AT HAIFA JERUSALEM, July 23. The British transport Empire Lifeguard, bringing legal Jewish immigrants from Cyprus, was sunk this morning in Haifa harbour by an internal explosion after all the immigrants had disembarked. It is believed that explosives were placed on board while the immigrants were embarking at Famagusta. No casualties were reported. The ship brought 261 immigrants as part of the monthly quota given entry certificates after detention at Cyprus. Salvage work has begun on the Empire Lifeguard, which is resting on the bottom of Haifa harbour.
