NO AMERICAN AID FOR POLAND
Food Supplies Held Adequate ANNOUNCEMENT IN WASHINGTON (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 9.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON, July 23. The State Department announced today that Poland's share of the 350,000,000-dollar American relief programme had been cancelled. The decision is based on the repart of an American mission which recently returned from Poland. This said that Poland’s minimum food needs could be met without help from the United States. It added that Imports of medical supplies and supplementary foodstuffs for special groups appeared to be justified, and that some imports of grain, seed, and fertiliser would be helpful. The State Department, however, said that such special items could be supplied through private agencies and other sources such as the International Emergency Children’s Fund. Congress recently approved the 350,000,000-dollar relief programme for countries in Europe and Asia, including Poland, which were previously assisted by UNRRA. Reuters says that diplomatic quarters link the decision with Poland’s refusal to participate in the Marshall plan, but General Marshall, addressing a press conference later to-day, denied that the cancellation of relief was connected with Poland’s refusal to participate in the Marshall plan.
