DUTCH PLANES IN INDIES
FORMER LEND-LEASE EQUIPMENT
(Rec. 7 p.m.) WASHINGTON; July 23. The United States Secretary of State (General Marshall), at a press conference to-day. disclosed that the Dutch in Indonesia possess 118 former British lend-lease fighters and bombers. A spokesman for the State Department later explained that the aircraft were not left behind and handed over to the Dutch by the British, but had been furnished to the Dutch during the Second World War under lendlease, and that the British were not involved in any aspect of the transaction.
General Marshall emphasised that the United States had not sent any “lethal weapons” to the Dutch after Japan surrendered, apart from fulfilling certain commitments and equipping fc Netherlands marine regiment which was trained in the United States.
